Hungarian Parliament Building Hotels

Being one of the oldest government buildings in Europe, the Hungarian Parliament Building stands out as a prominent Budapest tourist attraction. Lying on the banks of the Danube River, the Hungarian Parliament building is the largest building in Budapest. Construction of the Hungarian Parliament Building was completed in 1904 and today remains the seat of the National Assembly of Hungary.

The Hungarian Parliament Building in Budapest

The largest of any building in all of Hungary, the Hungarian Parliament Building stands at the edge of the Danube River in Lajos Kossuth Square. In eclectic architectural style, the historic Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture building is situated opposite on the square, as does the Ethnographical Museum that celebrates Hungarian folk traditions. Meanwhile, the Parliament Building, where the National Assembly meets, is a stately landmark that reflects in the waters of the Danube, a wonder of architecture and open to the public for touring.

History and Architectural Style

In 1873, three cities in the region united as one and became Budapest. Seven years of governmental and city organization passed and the National Assembly decided the time had come to construct a building as a fitting symbol of the sovereign Hungarian nation. After a worldwide competition, Imre Steindl won and construction began in 1885. Over one thousand people worked on building the structure. The almost completed building was the center for the nation's 100th anniversary. The finished building opened in 1904.

The Parliament Building's architectural style is Gothic Revival. The ornate structure has a dome in the middle that stands 268 m high and a grand, symmetrical entryway looks out over the river. Statues of the rulers of the nation, famous military heroes and Transylvanian monarchs are on the front of the entryway. Entering, the palatial interior opens into a grand hall and a decorated stairway. Visitors that tour the building can see inside many of the nation's finest treasures on display.

Then, the city has one of the oldest zoos in the world, the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Gardens with its zoo, nature reserve, animal park and lovely gardens. On the right bank of the Danube near the Parliament Building, Budapest has many gems to discover.
