The Nyugati Palyaudvar Train Station in Budapest
Your travels in Budapest will no doubt intersect with the Nyugati Palyaudvar Train Station, one of three in the city. The grand old building, erected in 1877 by the same company responsible for the Eiffel tower, is a work of architectural art. It has become a piece of Budapest’s architectural heritage, an achievement for something as utilitarian as a train station. It was at one time one of the five largest railway stations in the world.
Today, the structure is unchanged, and additions to it have been modified in keeping with the style of the building. The McDonalds restaurant, ordinarily a banal thing, is sometimes called the most beautiful fast food restaurant in the world. The city having grown up around the station, there are many attractions within close walking distance of the Nyugati.
Immediately behind, and arguably even part of the station is the Westend Shopping Centre, one of Europe’s largest. A gentle stroll brings you to the Liszt Ferenc Square, with its myriads of sidewalk cafes. Or you can reach the Oktogon, and board the metro to travel to a farther destination within the city. In the evening, a short promenade to the Hungarian State Opera will thrill the sophisticated traveler.
For the adventurous, a tunnel under the station can be entered just off Podmaniczky on the Eastern side. Dimly lit, the traveler is plunged into the gaslight era when the station was new and horses still ruled the avenues overhead. Another interesting bit of history is to notice the glass on the facade is new. In the 1970s a derailed train burst through the station, breaking much of the glass. Nyugati is also the site of the first electric tramway in Budapest, a system that is relied upon for transport to this day.
Within easy travel distance of the Nyugati Palyaudvar station are the Heroes Square with its monuments and beautiful houses. The Museum of Fine Arts an the Kunsthalle Budapest lie in the area, and for a quiet walk in this jewel of European cities, travel to the City Park.
