The Budapest Museum of Fine Arts, or Szépmuvészeti Múzeum, is located in Heroe's Square. It was built by Albert Schickendanz in around 1900. The museum is positioned across from the Palace of Art. This museum contains a wide variety of ancient egyptian art, classical art, sculptures, and master paintings. The collection includes work from Monet, Renoir, and Da Vinci.

All About The Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest

Built in the early years of the twentieth century, the architectural style of the museum is eclectic/neoclassic. Its more than 1,000-piece collection is Hungarian, and international, art and includes six departments that displays all periods of European art.

The Museum of Fine Arts holds one of the largest collections of ancient Egyptian art in central Europe, and was begun by Hungarian Egyptologist Eduard Mahler in the 1930s. The core of the museum’s collections is its classical antiquities, which includes works from Rome and ancient Greece, as well as its bronzes and ceramics.

Its 3,000 paintings display almost the entire history of European paintings ranging from the 1200s to the 1800s, from Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, France, and England. The museum has a notable collection of most of the Spanish masters, including El Greco, Goya, and Velázquez.

Much of the museum is devoted to sculpture from medieval times to the 1600s, including a small equestrian figure by da Vinci and German/Austrian wooden sculptures. It displays a rotating exhibition of 100,000 prints and 10,000 drawings that represent all periods of European graphic art. This collection includes two studies by da Vinci, fifteen drawings by Rembrandt, and 200 pieces by Goya.

The museum’s collection of 19th and 20th century art is the youngest and smallest of its entire collection. Most of the paintings in this particular collection are French, but it reaches into the Romantic and Impressionistic period. There are also many sculptures by Rodin and Menier.

Beginning the summer of 2011, Thursday nights are the best times to visit the Museum of Fine Arts. The museum is open longer, and offers great entertainment for its patrons. Starting at 5:15pm, you’ll be able to actually handle the art—original Egyptian objects—in the lower level’s lobby. At 6pm, there will be a jazz salon and special art courses in the Marble Hall, and at 7pm, special musical and dramatic performances. Also at 7pm, guided tours throughout the museum will be offered in English.
