A Guide to Downtown Budapest
Budapest, the capital city of Hungary, has a colorful history filled with conquests, wars, invasions and liberations in a seemingly endless cycle.
Founded in 1873, Budapest is a rather young city by European standards. Formed by the joining of three cities - Obuda, Buda and Pest - the history of the area goes back many centuries with a written account dating to the Roman conquest and colonization of the area that they named Pannonia in 35 BC. Budapest, a member of the European Union since 2005, is now a thriving metropolis and is growing at a rapid pace.
Budapest is well known for its therapeutic thermal baths. Thermal springs were discovered by the Romans after they began colonizing the area, prompting them to build the first public baths in the city. To enjoy a soak in true Hungarian style, be sure to pay a visit to Széchenyi medicinal baths, which are the largest in all of Europe and located in City Park beside the Budapest Zoo.
There are many attractions and historical sites that are well worth visiting in Budapest. Of course the thermal baths have their appeal, but there is much more to this remarkable city waiting to be discovered!
A truly magnificent landmark in downtown Budapest is St. Stephen's Basilica, which is dedicated to the first king of Hungary, King Stephen, who was key in bringing Christianity to the nomadic Hungarian tribes. Inside are beautiful mosaics, frescoes and magnificent statues including a marble statue of St. Stephen. Probably the most treasured relic found at St. Stephen's is The Holy Right of St. Stephen, the mummified right hand of the beloved King Stephen.
Matthias Church, located in the Buda Castle District, is one of the most popular attractions in Budapest. Originally constructed in 1015, Matthias Church has undergone extensive restoration, primarily in the late 19th century, to restore it to its early Gothic grandeur.
The Great Market Hall, located in downtown Pest, is an ideal place to soak up local atmosphere and to do some serious shopping. Traditional Hungarian specialties, baked goods, fresh vegetables, seafoods and souvenirs are offered throughout.
